They will work on a board and follow along with the instructors on how to use moving lights and make several moving light cues.

Intelligence lives not only in what is written but also in the body. In this workshop players will be guided through light theater/clown games, written exercises, and discussion that blends observation, reflection, and bubble popping questions. This workshop explores strategies for working with a cast on collaborative and ensemble-centered approaches to staging using techniques drawn from applied theatre and devised theatre. The focus of this workshop will be on working with pre-existing theatrical texts, as opposed to devised productions in which the company generates the text and staging together. As part of the workshop, I will bring short scene excerpts and devising or staging prompts to demonstrate how directors can use an ensemble-based staging approach to expand their repertoire of blocking techniques, harness the creative potential of the ensemble in developing dynamic staging and stage pictures, and empower their actors in the collaborative process. Actors will gain insights into how to contribute meaningfully to the staging process, develop ensemble awareness, and unlock their creative potential within collaborative settings.

How diverse and inclusive is the technical theatre program at your school? These are all questions I am exploring in my senior honors thesis project. My final project is study of the lighting design process, documenting each step as well as hosting a talkback after a show to discuss the process with audience members. I want to be able to talk to fellow students and educators before this project runs next Fall to gain differing perspectives of not just their lighting design area, but also what their technical theatre program is like. What are your experiences? How can we expose invisible labor? How can we change the conversation? How can we continue to make technical theatre a diverse and inclusive space not just for theatre majors, but everyone? I hope to create a space where we can discuss how to make technical theatre and lighting design a more exposed area and how to expand upon diversity and inclusion going forward. General, open to all. NTI Artistic Director, Rachel Jett, draws upon teaching techniques of master teacher, Andrei Droznin, to bring you this workshop. Droznin is a Russian movement style that originated at the Moscow Art Theater in Russia by Andrei Droznin. The goal of this work is to forge/identify a connection between body and mind as well as body and soul. That way, when an individual feels something, their instinctual response will be to express themselves. Additionally, Droznin has described his method as "living movement" - stage movement that blurs the boundaries between dance, mime, and vernacular gesture. This, in turn, allows the audience to identify with performances in additional depth. Rachel Jett is the first American teacher of Droznin, as she studied directly under his guidance in Moscow, and is thrilled to bring KCACTF Region 1 a taste!

"Playwright and Actor Sadie Chamberlain, Saint Michael's College (SMC) class of '25, will share the origins of and inspiration for her play ""A Taste of Freedom"" which explores her lived experiences as a person with Cerebral Palsy. Set within a mystical Celtic landscape, “A Taste of Freedom” uses the power of the human imagination to explore the internal complexities of life as a person with a disability.
The play recently served as the Fall Mainstage production at SMC with Chamberlain playing the protagonist, The Maiden, who escapes her physical limits by hiring a surrogate, The Siren, to act in her stead. The Siren seduces The Highlander, who is somewhere between a Lumberjack and a Disney Prince. The Maiden watches from a control booth, providing special effects; but she can't resist intervening and is eventually ""outed"" and reluctantly drawn into the action herself...
Chamberlain will detail the origins of the play, which began as a coping method, and the way the play evolved during two years of rewrites. Professor Peter Harrigan, who served as Advisor and Director, will share comments, and introduce a professionally-filmed 17 minute video sequence from the play. Both speakers will share audience responses to the play, and speak about the importance of representation and advocacy, and allow time for Q&A.

General, open to all. Designers create the tangible elements of design. But how do we approach and describe the world of the play from the perspective of a playwright or a director? How can we participate in world building without being heavy handed with how talk about, think about and work towards a 3 dimensional representation that the play exists in. Students participating in this workshop are asked to bring in some adjectives that describe what it feels like to live where they are from without being literal. For instance – I am from New Hampshire and it feels crisp with a slight coolness to the air. I hear crushed leaves and smell cut grass. It is quiet except for the sound of cars intermittently passing by on the surrounding, distant roads. I can feel my lungs fill with clean, cold air. It feels vast and also full of nature and trees. We will read a short 10-minute play and participants will work in groups to create a vision/image/mood board that describes the elements of the world. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or some kind of device that allows them to search for images or music.

Knowing your writing might never get to leave the page and be performed sucks even more, especially when you know that your university favors producing tried and true published works over yours. So why propose your idea? This workshop takes a look at the process of writing a full length show as an undergraduate student, from the perspective of a recent undergraduate student, and the process one might undergo to get their show directed and produced as a mainstage at their current university, especially without the proper faculty support and student advocacy that should be expected in the theatrical collegiate institutions. It also proposes some ways that faculty members might seek to inspire, nurture, and propose change to promote their students' artistic works and further their careers as growing young thespians. The workshop will be set around observing the timeline that it took to get a show produced at a state liberal arts college, from its conception, how long it took to write, when student directors/designers were approached, the paper trail of proposing it to faculty, the budgets, the casting process, and the eventual outcome of the show.

Students should come with a short monologue prepared as if they were at an audition; however this is a technical class. We will explore the basics of: framing, angles, lighting, sound, background, camera terminology and tricks to get the most our of any filming situation.
The goal for Filmmaking for the Actor is to create access; by eliminating the technological gatekeepers for young actors. So many great young actors are not equipped with the filmmaking demands being put on them by the industry. This workshop aims to provide participants with the tools to succeed regardless of means or background.

Using a Juliet speech from R & J, I work with the participants on unlocking each piece of the text to make it accessible for themselves, their scene partner(s), and ultimately the audience. Great for actors and directors, this workshop demystifies challenging texts in a way that's fun, collaborative, and empowering. General, open to all. "Have you ever wanted to submit your playwriting work but not known where to start? Or are you an experienced playwright who wants more tools to talk about your work? The proposed workshop is devoted to demystifying the submissions process for playwrights of all experience levels in three parts: gaining knowledge, sharing resources/experiences, and creating work. This quick and basic session is built for those who might align with marginalized identities, as well as learning for those in a place of privilege. Overall, this workshop will aim to expand its attendees’ ideas about what sending out their work can look like and how to stay true to their values through that process.
The first thirty minutes would be devoted to sharing working knowledge. This segment would be carried out with my knowledge as a professional playwright as well as a reader for organizations like the Playwrights Foundation, the Leah Ryan Fund, the Alliance Theater, and more.
The second segment of the workshop (about ten minutes) would center sharing experiences and resources around sending out work. Folks would have a chance to speak in small groups about their personal experiences and success strategies, as well as ask questions of each other and the facilitator.
Finally, the workshop would culminate in a guided exercise meant to generate an artistic statement or goals statement based on the preceding segments. Participants would begin with a facilitated free-write, with an invitation to share out at the end of the free write.
The overall goal of the workshop is to create literacy around sharing original work, giving more students a chance to understand the professional playwriting industry while making space for creativity, centering playwrights of marginalized identities. "
