About me
Dr. Shawna Mefferd Kelty is a director, dramaturg, and chair of the Theatre Department at SUNY Plattsburgh (SDC Associate member and LMDA member). She teaches directing, dramatic lit (including Canadian Theatre, African American Dramas, and Contemporary Women Playwrights), history (Spring 2024 is all about the Federal Theatre Project and a history of labor in US theatre), Theatre of the Oppressed, and performance. She works primarily in new play development at universities and on professional stages (2 OB credits!), and through a variety of theatre organizations. Shawna loves working with playwrights on the stories they tell and the worlds they invent. Her recent directing projects include a new 10-minute play by Mikki Gillette, I Had My Suspicions, in Madison, WI, Kimberly Belflower's John Proctor Is the Villain, Monty Python's Spamalot, and Bunnicula at SUNY Plattsburgh. She is also the artistic director of their upcoming 24-hour play festival and semi-annual 10-minute play festival in downtown Plattsburgh.
Shawna is also a distance runner, yogi/yoga instructor, a stellar auntie, and the worlds okayest hooman lab assistant to Dr. Beatrice Waffles, cat scientist (dual PhDs from Prancetown University in kittology and kittosophy), conducting field research in The Backyard and the airlock between the windows in a region called "upstairs bathroom," which is an unconfirmed space portal. Dr. Waffles is also a 2-time Feline Olympic Gold medalist in Undering. It's a lot of training, y'all.
